It has been 6 months since I started publishing on Medium. I started writing on Medium for two main reasons:
- Feedback on my fiction writing
- To see whether I could actually earn from writing.
Publishing on Medium has actually been an idea of my husband. He already had an account and uses it mainly for reading articles in the field of programming and new technologies.
The Medium Partner Program
Setting up a Medium account is super easy and so is the interface for writing your articles. Joining the Partner Program didn’t take much effort either. So far so good. The first 3 articles that I published were free to read: a thrilling short story Hunted, My opinion on AI art generators/editors and an About me article.
So far I received 111 views, of which 81 in the first month, and 49 reads for my first publication, Hunted. It’s a 18-minutes read and as I soon found out, that means a long read for a Medium story. After a couple of months I decided to put it behind the paywall since I had put quite some effort in writing it. So far I have earned 3 cents for a short story that took me a week to write, edit and rewrite.
A week after my first publication I decided to release some poetry that I wrote during my burnout and while I was recovering from it. The first one, Trapped, did very well. It now has a lifetime earnings of $3.44. My highest earning article is entitled My journey — Part 1 and earned me $3.60 so far. I have a couple of articles that didn’t make any money yet. So far I have released 42 articles. Two of them are short stories and eight of them are part of my still ongoing flash fiction series called Who is Kali? The other articles are mainly poems but once in a while I also release a blog article.
Most of my articles just make a couple of cents. I probably pay more for the electricity powering my equipment than the money I earn from my writing.
The read ratio of most of my articles is higher than 50%. The problem comes from the number of views: if I get 10 views a day, I can call myself lucky. It’s strange since I assumed that the number of views would increase with my increasing number of followers but that is definitely not the case. I have about 250…
